The tank stores compressed air under pressure, ensuring that sufficient volume is available when demand temporarily increases (peaks), when the compressor cannot or should not run constantly at maximum capacity, or to compensate for pressure drops in the system. A buffer tank can be positioned before the air treatment system (dryer and compressed air filters)—this is called a “wet compressed air receiver”—or after the air treatment components (“dry receiver”). A wet tank captures condensate and particles before the air is dried or filtered; a dry tank stores the already-treated air to provide additional air during peak loads or temporary spikes without placing an extra load on the dryer.

If the compressor can operate more quietly (less switching on and off), energy consumption decreases. Compressors often still consume 15-35% of full load consumption at no load; with a sufficient buffer tank, time at no load decreases.

When air passes through a wet tank before reaching the dryer, excess moisture condenses in the tank at the bottom. This reduces the load on the dryer and extends the service life of compressed air filters.
