A compressed air vessel – also called a buffer vessel, pressure vessel or compressed air receiver – is a storage reservoir for compressed air within a compressed air system. The vessel stores compressed air under pressure so that sufficient volume is available when demand rises temporarily (peaks), when the compressor cannot or should not run constantly at maximum power, or to accommodate pressure drops in the system. The vessel helps the compressor to operate more quietly, reduces frequent switching on and off, dampens pulsations and provides a stable compressed air supply.
A buffer vessel can be positioned before the air treatment (dryer and filters) – this is called a “wet compressed air vessel” – or after the air treatment components (“dry vessel”). A wet vessel captures condensation and particles before the air is dried or filtered; a dry vessel preserves the already treated air to provide additional air at peak load or temporary peaks without additional load on the dryer.
Below are the core functions and benefits of a compressed air vessel:
Stability at peak load
At usage peaks (machines start to temporarily consume additional air), the buffer tank ensures that sufficient compressed air is available without the compressor having to be immediately switched on or overloaded. Thus, network pressure remains stable.
Less downtime and longer compressor life
Without a buffer tank, the compressor will frequently switch between charging and idling (or idling). Such cycles cause wear, consume additional energy, and shorten service life. A buffer tank significantly reduces this effect.
Energy Efficiency
If the compressor can operate more quietly (less switching on and off), energy consumption decreases. Compressors often still consume 15-35% of full load consumption at no load; with a sufficient buffer tank, time at no load decreases.
Better operation of dryers and filters
When air before the dryer passes through a wet vessel, excess moisture already condenses in the vessel below. This unburdens the dryer and extends filter life.
Buffering in variable consumption situations
In productions with varying usage (different machines, shifts, stunt work), a buffer tank prevents pressure instability, with, for example, pressure drops in pipes or faltering pneumatic systems.
There are several situations in which renting a compressed air tank through JustAir is particularly useful:
Temporary projects or expansions
When you need additional air volume temporarily, such as for larger production runs, construction projects, events, or temporary installations.
Replacement or maintenance
If your existing buffer vessel is out of service for maintenance, or you are waiting for delivery of a purchase vessel.
Uncertainty about need and growth scenarios
You don’t want to invest in your own capacity right away, but you do want to be sure of capacity as your air needs increase. Renting gives flexibility.
Optimization of compressed air systems
As part of an audit or efficiency program, where it appears that current buffer vessels are too small – with rentals, you can quickly upgrade without long lead times.
Cost control
No large CAPEX, but predictable costs. Maintenance, certification, safety valves may be included in lease.
At JustAir, we make sure your compressed air system is running optimally with our rental vessels – with all the benefits of our service, with no investment of your own:
Wide range of capacity
We rent compressed air vessels of different sizes – small (< 500 L) to very large (rental possible for liters up to several m³), horizontal or vertical – tailored to your consumption, consumption peaks, and available space.
Material and certification
Our drums comply with all relevant European laws and regulations. Drums are CE/PED certified. For applications where corrosion or environmental and hygiene requirements are high, we offer galvanized or coated versions, with or without special inner layers.
Full service and maintenance included
Renting with JustAir means forgetting nothing: delivery, set-up, safety, connection, automatic or manual condensate drainage, inspection and testing of the vessel itself, safety equipment included.
Flexible rental periods
Both short-term (days, weeks) and longer-term projects or temporary replacements. Rates are calculated by content, printing class and rental duration.
Custom consulting and sizing
Pre-analysis of your compressed air consumption, pressure requirements, piping network, and usage patterns. We recommend the right vessel, avoid over- or under-specification, maximize ROI.
Improving system performance and reliability
Using buffer vessels through JustAir extends the life of your compressor, reduces maintenance costs, stabilizes pressure and air quality, and lowers energy consumption.
